After I posted my letter about starting a new job at Dreamworks I got a lot of messages and emails from people asking if I could talk about my journey more in detail and how I got here despite going to school in Pittsburgh for psychology and almost giving up on animation halfway through college. I know that I would have appreciated reading something like this a year and a half ago so I thought I’d share my story in the hopes that it might be able to help someone who is struggling. Plus: a detailed explanation of how social media has done so much for me as an artist.

I’ve been asked a lot about tips for aspiring animators, so here are some ! Enjoy, I hope it will help some of you.
Oh, and for the ones wondering who I am, I’m a french 2D animator. I studied animation at Gobelins like 10 years ago and ever since I’ve been mostly working as a 2D animator for feature films, commercials, shorts and shows.
Animation is team work, your design must be easy to work with.
I use mainly the blue/red pencil tools! You can easily change their colors by turning them into brushes. With that said though, pretty much any kind of pencil or pastel imitation brush will probably serve you just as well to get that traditional dry media effect.
Sangwoo’s attractiveness is a really interesting part of his character.
Villains are commonly presented as disfigured or disabled. This is actually such a prevalent part of media that it’s discussed academically. Micheal Myers, Jason Voorhees, Two-face, Candyman, Leatherface, Darth Vader, every Bond villain, and even the villain Dr. Poison from the ‘progressive’ Wonder Woman is given a facial disfigurement as a symbol for how evil they are. And all the protagonists in these stories are beautiful, and they are beautiful because they are good.
Villains are made disfigured, disabled, ‘unattractive’ as a way to show that they’ve lost their humanity. It’s that ‘evil makes you ugly’ trope or the ‘evil cripple’ trope and it’s rooted in ableism.
KS handles this trope in an interesting way. Bum has a limp, he’s disabled at this point, he’s described as ugly, creepy, and he’s reviled by other characters because of this.
Jieun is threatened merely by the way he looks, even though he’s ultimately harmless. Sangwoo on the other hand, he’s loved by people who know nothing about him because he’s beautiful. He lures people with his looks, the audience is affected by this too, they’re supposed to be and they know they are.
The subversion of the ‘evil makes you ugly’ trope by switching the typical physical attributes of the protagonist and antagonist is one of the more thoughtful parts of this manhwa. A disabled, ‘unattractive’ protagonist being tormented by a beautiful villain is a critical part of the story. We’re shown how differently they’re treated by the outside world.
It’s why these scenes are so painful, Bum is constantly looked down on because of his appearance, while Sanwoo is looked up to, which is reflected by the composition of panels. Sangwoo is always standing above everyone else in the frame, that’s how the world views him, and Bum is always below.
Hi! I’m mothermultiverse @ disqus and I’d like to receive some general critique of my art , if possible. I’m a bit worried of my style (do I have one?) color, anatomy and composition. Anything you could say will be fine! Thank you and keep being awesome!
Yeah, I would suggest you work on style development! ;0 Play around with different techniques and see which ones suit you best. Maybe merge a few styles you like, or take a bit of inspiration from other people’s styles. It’s hard to give you advice because the fluctuation in your style causes your strengths and weaknesses to differ each time you draw,, All I can advise you to do is work with different color schemes and play around with colors in general! It helped me with coloring and shading skills. ;0 Hope I helped a bit.
Ship hate is when it’s either; Threatening, Suicide Baiting shippers, saying things like (shipname) is dead, act aggressive when they see ship blogs they are against being recommended
Ship hate is not; “Please tag (shipname) for me/in the future” “i don’t like it …as much/something like that/no aggression towards people” “Please don’t follow if you ship (shipname)!” This is ship hate at some level but it obvious they don’t want to start anything so you can flag the post but there will probably be no reason to block, unless you want. Now if it’s aggression like “You better not follow me if you ship ____ because I hate you, you’re fucking gross!! lol!” then you can flag and block.
2) Go down and click the lil dots on the post
It will open a drop menu
And click “flag this post”
This next Menu will be opened:
>> Click under What’s going On? “This is Spam”
>> And once it’s checked
>> Click “Flag & Block”
And BOOM! Flagged and blocked, you won’t see their posts when you’re in the tag and they can’t interact with you at all.
I have been doing this for the past few weeks and it’s honestly, refreshing. Just do it. Block these people before they get to you eventually. And if they invade, block evade(?) you can report them officially.
If their blog is constantly in the tag spamming it with hate. Then flag their blog.
And furthermore Shippers, stay out of anti tags too. Since they can do this to you as well. It’s easy and simple and it will feel better afterwards.
note: i am not encouraging you to trespass or break the law. if someone clearly does not want you on their property (the place is boarded up, and someone has made an effort to keep you out), then maybe that house is not meant to be explored. i do not encourage breaking in, and i do not encourage vandalism. if you are stealing things of value, or lowering the value of the house in any way, you should be ashamed and this blog is definitely not for you. also, be safe and responsible and no one is to blame but yourself if you end up hurt or in trouble. if you want to enjoy this hobby right, i have the following tips:
1. Bring a Buddy: One of the most important things to have if you’re exploring an abandoned house is to have a friend. Preferably a strong one! Do not go alone. If you fall through the stairs and lose consciousness or something, you want someone to be able to call for help.
2. Stay Connected: We are fortunate to live in an age of technology. Always carry a cell phone that is fully charged in case something bad happens, and you can call 911. Also, make sure someone knows you are there! Tell someone when you are going, and tell someone when you plan to return. When you are home safe, tell them you are. It may seem silly but if something goes wrong, they know where to look first.
3. Safety First: Always look for holes in the floor, and avoid stairs in old houses. Check the ceilings of the rooms you’re in, because if the ceilings look iffy, you could fall through the floor. I like to avoid basements and attics because you never know what you could find. Also, don’t go at night. Not only will it be pitch black due to lack of electricity, but also you won’t see any danger.
4. Be Prepared: Don’t go to this house empty handed. Bring a cell phone, good shoes to avoid broken glass, a flashlight, and pepper spray. I say pepper spray because you may not be alone. The #1 question I get is “Are you scared of drifters or badly behaved teenagers or wild animals?” The answer is yes. I think this is somewhat of a misconception, and i’ve never heard of this happening to anybody, and I know a lot of people in this hobby. But i’m not going to say it’s impossible, so once again be prepared. I have seen drifter camps set up in abandoned houses. If you think someone’s inside, just get out of there.
5. Be Respectful: Don’t do drugs, drink, steal, or vandalize. Note when I say steal, I don’t mean that taking a little trinket is wrong. I collect little items such as broken metal, old magazine pages, recipe cards, and things like that. But when you’re stealing the TV or boxes of stuff, that’s wrong. Some may say that taking anything is wrong, but i’m letting you the reader make the judgement call ethically. Also if the police do come, they’ll be more likely to let a respectful urban explorer off with a warning than a drugged up person with spray paint all over them, you know?
Basically, follow your gut, be nice, and if you have a bad feeling then just leave. I’ll answer any questions you have, but i’m hoping this clears a lot of things up for potential explorers.
