A reminder of what’s wrong with Dobson’s anti-harassment Star Wars comic

Point the first:

The man prefaces his comic by saying “I think this is secretly why a lot of “fans” don’t like The Last Jedi“, then gets snitty when people address the point that he brought up in the first place.

(His ‘PS’ is pathetic ass-covering because while he says there he doesn’t mean ALL fans, which is true– he literally started the prior paragraph by saying a lot of fans.)

Point the second:

MEANWHILE, TWO WEEKS AGO

The Overall Point

Dobson’s baseline message is something that most people will agree with– it’s not acceptable to harass actors because of the roles they played in movies. But bear in mine the following:

– Dobson does not distinguish between legitimate critique and ‘harassing the actors’. It is an easy nuclear option to say that somebody didn’t like a movie or an actor’s performance for bigoted reasons, and when people try and explain otherwise he shuts them down and says "Just agree with me about this one specific point even if I made a broad, sweeping assessment about ‘a lot’ of people”. He isn’t looking for legitimate discussion or the calling out of a toxic culture– he’s latching on to a bandwagon and backpedaling when people call him out on bullshit, effectively pretending that because people take umbrage to his sweeping statement and want to have a legitimate discussion about the merits of a movie irrespective of its actors, they’re actually bigots who support harassment.

(We will further remember that Dobson’s main form of response to long arguments he can’t rebuff is (if he’s not immediately calling somebody racist, sexist, or a Nazi) to nitpick a single statement and ignore everything else about the opposing argument. So people zeroing in on his sweeping statement about ‘a lot of “fans”’ is a justified use of his own tactic, which he determines is completely unacceptable when used against him.)

– Dobson does not even believe in it. He’s latching on to this particular story because it’s gained traction among the circles he frequents, but his opinion on the matter changes with the wind and changes more sharply with the targets. It’s not okay to harass actors of a movie that he likes because of course it isn’t, but it is acceptable to go out of your way to viciously harass regular people on the street because of the politician they (probably but not necessarily demonstrably) voted for.

– And of course, “I no longer agree with this type of aggression”? Which is why he gleefully supported Kathy Griffin holding a severed Trump head and then went on to make an illustration (that is, tracing of ‘Judith Slaying Holofernes’) of Kathy Griffin and Lady Liberty graphically beheading Trump, himself.

This is the problem with the comic– not necessarily its message, but the blatantly hypocritical and disingenuous nature of its sender.

“I am always both amazed and impressed how you can break down Dobson’s hypocrisy so well in these submissions. Seriously, always glad to see them.” -THOAD
